OPEN CALL FOR REEL: DYKE HANDS

Submissions have now opened for REEL: DYKE HANDS, a showcase of moving image work presented in the gallery at @198_cal, South London, for 8 weeks from February 2024. From this open call Languid Hands will curate a programme of short films & works of moving image by black lesbians*.

Submissions are open to artists & filmmakers of any age or stage in their career, based anywhere in the world. We are specifically looking for pre-existing works by people who identify with black lesbianism, however, we are open to works directed by people who do not identify this way, if the works production has a significant & meaningful amount of collaboration from someone who does. We welcome films, artists’ moving image and video works of any genre and subject matter up to 45 minutes in length. Your work does not need to be specifically about blackness or lesbian identity and each application can include up to 3 works. All of the films will be projected in the gallery space on a loop altogether so there won’t be the opportunity for specific screens, installations, or for individual works to be looped.

Selected filmmakers will receive a screening fee of £300. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide funds for travel to attend.

To submit, please send the following in an email to isha@198.org.uk:

  • Artist Name
  • Location
  • How you identify (if you are not a member of the communities stated in the call, please also outline the nature of your collaboration with those who are here)
  • Artist/Filmmaker Bio
  • Link(s) to work you’d like to submit with passwords if needed (you can submit up to 3)
  • Summary/Description of each work submitted (max 300 words each)

*We use the terms ‘dyke’ and ‘lesbian’ in an intentional and inclusive way. This opportunity centres lesbians and is open to queer and bisexual women, transmasculine people, transfeminine people, intersex & non-binary people who feel comfortable with those (or similar) terms in relation to their identity.

Dyke Hands is an ongoing artistic programming strand curated by lead curators Languid Hands at 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning, focusing on the work of dykes, lesbians, and queer and trans people more broadly, exploring their work through various disciplines including poetry, writing, film, performance, & music.
